-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Marta Smith Tries Out Her New Arms, Legs and Head Marta Smith just got back from a five day art doll workshop with two of the world's top doll makers. Marlaine Verhelst and Ankie Daanen are from the Netherlands and teach in North America twice a year, so she traveled to Houston Texas to be one of only 12 students in the class. The 24" doll she created has a head, arms & legs crafted from an air-drying, stone clay, her first venture into sculpting heads and hands with anything other than fabric. These clay parts are then attached to a cloth body and finished with elaborate costuming and water colour painted facial features.
Marta reflects, "After four years of doll making, I attempted many techniques that were unknown to me. And a rich, subtle colour scheme in the silk clothing was a change after working with brightly coloured cottons and knit fabrics at home. I feel the course pushed me to another level in my doll making and submersed me in a European approach to art doll creation that is very different from what most North American doll makers are doing." Expect some new and exciting dolls from Marta at Arts on Main!
