The Prince Edward Arts Council has officially moved their office from the back of the AOMG to the new Edward Building just down the street, which has allowed us to increase the number of AOMG artists. We’d love for you to join us in welcoming them and to view and buy their art at the gallery during the opening of our first new show of 2009. These artists are Richard Brzozowski, Linda Labelle, Rick Matthews, Paul Ross, Virginia Mitchell, Gerry Putman, and Kirei Samuel: you can read more about them below.

Arts on Main Presents- Richard Brzozowski Richard Brzozowski came to the County in 2000 as a woodturner, but joins AOMG as a painter of heavily impastoed abstract art - which he finds challenging. ‘A landscape or still life provides a hand-hold for the artist and viewer through the subject matter, whereas in non-representational art we have to generate interest with composition, values and colour.'Deeply smitten by 'les Automatistes' he paints with spontaneity - and a knife!
Arts On Main Presents -Paul Ross Paul began woodturning 27 years ago doing a fair bit of production wood turning for a few small shops in Ontario. This honed his technical skills as well as helped him grow in awareness of design. He spent some time with Dennis Stewart, a world-renowned wood turner himself. This sparked Paul’s interest for hollow turning in a way that he began to look at wood turning not only as a functional craft, but also as a way of using various woods to enhance each other. He has been teaching woodturning since 1988 and currently resides in the village of Boston, ON. Paul says, “It gives me great satisfaction to be able to work at something I truly enjoy as well as being able to always learn and grow.” Paul and his wife Lynne are moving shortly to 212 Main St., Bloomfield. The name of the studio is Chalet Woodcraft Inc.
AOMG Presents- Virginia Mithcell Virginia has always been interested in art, but didn't take up painting seriously until she joined an art group in California and began selling her work in the 1960's. Over the years she has taken lessons from many known artists such as Peter Egeli in Maryland, who got her started in watercolour. She also enjoyed a year at Georgian College in Barrie taking Art & Design Fundamentals. Virginia has been painting in Prince Edward County for sixteen years and this is where she finds her favourite subjects; landscapes, interesting houses, flowers and objects that appeal to her. She usually works in watercolour, but also ventures into oils, pen & ink or even a combination of pencil and watercolour. She is looking forward to membership in Arts On Main! She also shows her work at the Sidestreet Gallery in Wellington and at her studio at 34 King Street, Picton.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Arts On Main Presents- Kirei Samuel Kirei Samuel started designing jewelry part time in 1994 and in 2003 she turned her business into a full time adventure. She creates her designs using various techniques such as glass fusing, soldering with lead free solder, sandblasting into glass, twisting or stirring molten glass. She also sculpts copper wire into unique shapes that she hammers flat. Kirei moved to PEC in 2007; she grew up in Ireland and finds many similarities between the two cultures especially the quirkiness of some of the characters she has had the pleasure of meeting and some situations she has found herself in. Kirei’s love of the absurd probably started in childhood when her parents decided to name her after a horse; she is happy to report that she has taught herself not to neigh….. Kirei’s studio and Gallery "LaLaLand" at 2317 County Road #1 has a large range of jewelry and other glass pieces including plates and bowls. It is best to call first 613 393-1307.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Arts on Main Presents- Rick Matthews Rick Matthews is a photographer of nature and landscapes, from the County and from his international travels. He is also joining AOM for our new show.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Arts ON Main Presents- Gerry Putman Gerry is a graduate of the Ontario College of Art in Toronto in the field of Advertising Design with some Industrial Design, and upon graduation he became a designer for R.B.W. printers in Owen Sound and McLean's Magazine in Toronto before founding his own design studio in Belleville. For the twenty-three years he enjoyed the challenge of instructing young, creative minds until his retirement in 1992 from his position as Art Head at Prince Edward Collegiate, as well as operated a home studio in Picton until 2002. Gerry’s favourite media are watercolours, oils and pen and ink. His favourite subjects are landscapes and seascapes, especially when they incorporate the effects of fog, snow or transparency and reflections. Gerry has had numerous exhibitions, both solo and as a co-exhibitor and has twice won the "Artist of the Year" competition held annually at the Picton Fair. After a hiatus of seven years, during which Gerry and his wife Bawn created a book for their family, he says, “it feels great to be once again working in the art community in the County, especially with such a talented group as the Arts on Main Gallery members.”
Out and About Judy Kent is one of AOMG regulars with her beautiful landscapes but also has taken on another interesting job; Kent recently returned from Amman, Jordan where she was the Lead Facilitator for a peace camp hosted by Generations For Peace. His Royal Highness Prince Feisal bin Al-Hussein of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, established Generations For Peace as a global initiative that aims to use sport as a means to help instill dialogue, tolerance and ultimately peace amongst people in areas experiencing conflict and hostility. Seventy-one delegates from 16 war-torn countries attended the 10-day camp. Successful delegates are certified as peace pioneers and are expected to design and implement Generation For Peace programs in their home communities. These programs are used both as the means to gather children together to learn peace building skills and to train future trainers and peace pioneers. The camp included both classroom and gymnasia sessions covering the theory, practice and application of working with children, training adults leaders, learning peace building, conflict resolution skills, and advocacy skills such as dealing with the media, building partnerships and sponsorships. Judy states “It is both a sad and uplifting experience to share the stories of the delegates. Most of them were victims of violence and war, and somehow have survived with a fervent desire to make this world a better place, and their communities a safe and happy home for children. Judy will continue as Lead Facilitator of the 2009 Generations For Peace camps, the first of which will be held in Abu Dhabi in March.
